Having previously used their dnuoS ytiviL offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think Batu, Bruce, Hodge and Alex Coulton), Bristol's Livity Sound crew turns to unknown French producer Simo Cell. The two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener "Piste Jaune" offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. The mystery man goes for the jugular on "Cellar Door", with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. Another fine Livity release. More

Following on from the success of their self titled label compilation in October, the Livity Sound collective returns for a final transmission in 2013 courtesy of their sister label dnuoS ytiviL. Florentino announces Kilometro Quinze, a brand-new EP out 20 October. The five-song project will be Florentino’s debut EP on XL Recordings as part of the iconic house bag series. Today Chicago-based percussionist, composer and producer Makaya McCraven announces the details of his new album In These Times, which is set for release on September 23rd via International Anthem / Nonesuch / XL Recordings. The first offering from the new album is a song tiled "Seventh String," which encapsulates the various musical dimensions present on McCraven's new album, a career-defining body of work that is a remarkable new peak for the already-soaring McCraven. In These Times is a collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as McCraven's personal experience as a product of a multinational, working class musician community. It's the recording that he's been trying to create for 7+ years, as it's been consistently in process in the background while he's put forth a prolific run of releases including: In The Moment (2015), Highly Rare (2017), Where We Come From (2018), Universal Beings (2018), We're New Again (2020), Universal Beings E&F Sides (2020), and Deciphering the Message (2021). With contributions from over a dozen musicians and creative partners from his tight-knit circle of collaborators - including Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Brandee Younger, Joel Ross, and Marquis Hill - the music was recorded in five different studios and four live performance spaces while McCraven engaged in extensive post-production work at home. Featuring orchestral, large ensemble arrangements interwoven with the signature "organic beat music" sound that's become his signature, the album is an evolution and a milestone for McCraven, the producer. Just as important are the voices of Joy Orbison's family - mum, dad, sister Sarah, uncle Frankie, uncle Keith (recently departed), auntie Helen and cousins Lola, Mia and Leighann, who was the first person to introduce him to drum and bass and garage as a kid and stars on the mixtape’s cover art. They appear throughout the record via a series of voice notes, his only contact with his family during this year of worldwide lockdown and an intimate, vicarious glimpse into the personal world of an artist who has generally side-stepped the public gaze. Today Rozzma announces the ‘Khatar Sayeb’ EP, the artist’s first release for XL Recordings. He kicks off the EP release with ‘Hout’, a track that displays Rozzma’s knack for combining tribal sounds and contemporary urban/street music with a sharp, idiosyncratic flair.

Rozzma is an Egyptian sound artist inspired by the era where sound preceded music – he finds inspiration in the similarities between the wilderness of prehistoric times and modern-day chaos. Having already performed his particular strain of music across the world and at festivals like Sonar and Unsound, Rozzma releases ‘Hout’ into the digital world with an animated video created by the artist’s close friend Mahmoud Shiha.

“Hout is a celebration of beating the odds,” says Rozzma. “It’s about a specific state of mind where one finds comfort in the most extreme and unfortunate circumstances to beat the odds that one could instead fear.”

The EP’s title ‘Khatar Sayeb’ means 'loose danger’. “The release challenges the idea that danger and fear are uncontrollable circumstances,” explains Rozzma. “We cannot fully diminish fear or danger. We can only condition ourselves to believe that safety exists during the absence of fear. It is however more dangerous to deny the uncertainty of danger itself. Danger is a very broad state with infinite circumstances. But it is also infinitely uncertain and mainly linked to luck. We do not control our luck; good or bad. And it is solely luck that dictates danger and safety. It is for that reason that one’s best chances may be to condition themselves to find comfort in danger. Loose danger to be specific.”

It includes several songs written and performed some years earlier; "True Love Waits" dates to at least 1995, "Burn the Witch" to 2000, and "Present Tense" to 2008. The album features strings and choral vocals arranged by multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood and performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra.

MssingNo returns with the ‘Fones’ EP, the London artist’s debut release for XL Recordings.MssingNo first came to prominence in 2013 with the release of his debut ‘MssingNo’ EP on Goon Club Allstars. The EP immediately sent a seismic shock through the underground electronic music scene, especially EP track ‘XE2’ which became one of the year’s defining anthems and was named FACT magazine’s ‘track of the year’. Now, following a series of remixes of the likes of Cashmere Cat & Ariana Grande and Shura, plus collaborations with artists such as Katy B (on her forthcoming Honey album), MssingNo is set to release his follow up to the ‘MssingNo’ EP. Available on 12” and digitally, the ‘Fones’ EP will be released on XL Recordings – a label based within a stones throw of MssingNo’s Ladbroke Grove home studio – and features four tracks that showcase MssingNo’s crystalline hybrid of R&B and rave. Overflowing with trademark anthemic, ultra-melodic hooks, the ‘Fones’ EP is a further pointer towards MssingNo’s bright future. One track – Inta – was first featured on XL Recordings’ 2015 XL Chapter VI compilation album, while ‘Scope’ was premiered earlier this week by Radio 1’s Annie Mac. ‘The ‘Fones’ EP also sees XL continuing to reconnect with the spirit of the label’s early days.
