Research is the punk/funk/disco project of drummer Geoff Serle (Radius, Tek-San, Sonicphonics). Research have previously had releases on the German Dossier Label, Rong/DFA, Bearfunk and Paper Recordings.
The two tracks here are extra mixes from the Paper release of 2012 which featured the vocals of Valerie Maxfield (Groove Armada).
This is the first time these mixes have been available on vinyl.

Paper Recordings are back to the wax and tucked up nice and snug at All Ears ! Coming through with a heavyweight release, Day By Day by Research complete with a Psychemagik remix. Research were a post punk, industrial jazz funk band who formed in the early 80s supporting bands such as Material and Pigbag as well as playing sessions for the BBC and Womad. They released one album, the still sought after 'Social Systems'. Recent interest in the band resulted in releases on Rong / DFA and Bearfunk. Their 2010 Reworks twelve-inch was awarded single of the week on Boomkat. The Day By Day Dub is stripped back disco not disco that fuses live percussion, bass, guitars, drums, pads and vocals by Valerie Maxfield (Groove Armada / Freestylers) but with studio touches locking it down to a fierce groove. The tension builds until the Rhodes chords drop to give it some deep soul disco. Psychemagik continue their purple patch with a floor heavy mix that mixes up disco and deep house but is all class. They retain the original elements but add stabs, pads and bass and completely re-arrange it for dance floor impact. Best buckle up for this one. Magic ? You bet

Slip this delirious disc out of the lime/slime green sleeve and you're up close and personal with the new chapter in the TD saga.
A dance floor triptych of such seismic scale that the crew spent two years trying to wrangle the tracks on wax, finally finding a plant with the power to press them up.
Sprawling across the A-side is the devastating 'Doner Summer', an instrumental extension of some lost Munich disco masquerading as an Anatolian excursion. Ditching the vocals and cutting the kase, the crew lay down a galloping groove topped with Turkish licks and disco strings, take us into the psychedelic swirl of a tumbling drum breakdown before hitting the big red button marked banger for a searing second half. Firing up the hardware, TD blast this one further into the Phuture, dropping technoid sequences, nagging 303 and Cowley-style FX fuckery for a full on club assault.
In the alternate B-side universe, Hans Zimmer lost his dread note and Denis Villeneuve was forced to turn to Talking Drums for the Dune soundtrack. They obliged with the sci-fi rai of 'Chaba Ranks', reshaping an Algerian OG with a dancehall kick, off beat vamps and star-crossed synths, then letting loose with a heavy bass tone.
|In time honoured fashion, the team also drop a dub version, cutting out the vocals and focussing on those additional elements for the wildly cosmic 'Chaba Skanks'.

Hassan Ideddir’s 1989 single “Atfalouna” sees an expanded repress courtesy of Dark Entries. Born to Berber parents in Morocco, Ideddir began making music at the age of 10 after being discovered singing in the stairwell by his school’s headmaster. Encouraged by his peers, he began playing concerts, and his status grew. In 1987, he played a string of sold-out concerts in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh, in support of a children’s charity. The success of these concerts secured him a record deal, and he went to Paris to record his debut single “Atfalouna” in 1988.
Released in 1989 on WEA, “Atfalouna” is a dense slab of multi-genre pop. An opening wash of digital synths and reverberant vocals quickly falls away to a cascade of orchestra hits and pulsing electronic drums; the monotone chant-rap of a female chorus collides with Ideddir’s soaring melismatic vocals, pleading against the injustice and hunger in the world. While Hip-Hop and New Beat borrowed tropes from Arabic music, “Atfalouna” inverts the gesture, resituating orchestra hits and sampling techniques within a Moroccan music framework. A shorter instrumental version follows, which preserves the female vocals. Also included are two tracks not on the original 12”. “Ibina” is a moody, downtempo instrumental that sounds like a cult Italo B-side. The record closes with “Ydouchababe”, an electro number driven by funky guitars, electronic claps, huge horn riff. Here, Ideddir sings of a youth festival honoring Hassan II, former king of Morocco.
All songs were remastered by George Horn. The sleeve is a replica of the original 12” cover art, featuring Ideddir set in a cheeky collage of clocks, columns, and camels. Also included is a postcard with a photo of Hassan, as well as lyrics in both Arabic and English. We will be donating 100% of proceeds from this release to Sphere who provide support to the young queer community across Ukraine and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund who help provide urgent humanitarian care for Gaza's children. Celebrated new wave compilation from Japan reissued for the first time on Glossy Mistakes.
A much-cherished gem from the 1980s underground Japanese music scene returns as Soft Selection 84 is reissued by Glossy Mistakes for its 40th anniversary. Originally released on DIY label Soft, the compilation sees 13 tracks from nine acts spanning minimal, ambient, zolo and more for a beguiling listen.
The result is a charming time capsule of eclectic creativity in which nothing sounds dated. Take La Sellrose Can Can, whose two party jams predate Kero Kero Bonito's hyperpop by decades. In addition, an impeccable remastering from the original master tapes adds to the "could have been recorded yesterday" feel of the collection.
Soft Selection 84 also includes the eccentric Picky Picnic. One of the few featured artists with recordings beyond the anthology, the trio is an essential act for those curious about Japanese art pop of the era. There is also new wave introspection from Name, whose "Do We All Need Love" plays out as a sensual nod to John Lennon. In a similar vein is Clä-Sick, the recording name of Goro Some, the compilation's original producer and founder of Soft.
The record's rerelease comes with Some's blessing, along with his original artwork and photography. Ultimately, the listener is left tantalised by his selection and its bold excursions into no wave, synth pop, radioplay and bizzaro house. Most of the artists on this release would fade into obscurity, but the transient nature of the potential showcased has helped cement the compilation's reputation over the years.
Soft Selection will be released on vinyl LP by Glossy Mistakes on March 2024, with a remastering from the original master tapes.

Milagros del Ritmo is the third release of Harmonie Exotic, a label focused on reissues and compilations of obscure tracks.
The producer Jose Manuel, already known for his releases on Optimo Records, Music for Dreams and other labels, has selected ten rare tracks from 1988 to 1991. Starting as a DJ, Jose Manuel has developed over the years a passion for vinyl collection. This passion has also turned into work by creating the above mentioned label with the aim of bringing back the art of the past.
Milagros del Ritmo starts with the sexy voice of Debbie McKayle in "Necesito tu Amor". Her vocal mood reminds us "Sueño Latino " . The compilation continues with "Abadan" by Mondo Bagdad, who combined Arabic sounds with New Beat. Also in "Zena" (Dub) there are middle east and the first Chicago house influences. The next track "Mescla Del House", released in very late 80's, sees the Spanish vocal with the drum Roland TR-808. Then the compilation moves from Synth-pop with "Radio Arabesque" to the belearic downtempo with "Waves" by Ambionix and to EBM sounds with "Yoshua" by Danton's Voice .
In short, a brilliant selection of ten obscure, but at the same time floor killer tracks. Highly recommended!

The insanely-prolific (as well as simply, insane) DANGER BOYS are most likely no stranger to your ears. In the past few years, the Neapolitan duo of (Raffaele Arcella) WHODAMANNY and (Enrico Fierro) MILORD has churned out innumerable releases (both as solo artists and with their projects THE NORMALMEN and MYSTIC JUNGLE TRIBE, of which the duo comprises 2/3) that have infected dance floors the world over.
Here, the duo inhabits their latest incarnation/incantation: DANGER BOYS. The result: a postapocalyptic, post-punk, disco-not-disco masterpiece that sounds like a record you dug out of a dusty flea market bin in Mexico City in 1982 - or maybe 2082 - hard to truly say.
