Terence Fixmer returns to NovaMute with a new EP, The Swarm out on vinyl on 24 May 2019.
Terence Fixmer’s career has spanned two decades with releases on many acclaimed labels, most recently releasing his sixth solo album Through The Cortex, on Ostgut Ton. His sound deftly avoids repetition by developing soundscapes which maintain musical depth and integrity and he above all preserves an original style, an increasingly experimental, simultaneously ruthless and instantly recognizable aesthetic.
“The title track ‘The Swarm’, I made with the full Roland System 100 [1970s’s vintage semi-modular analogue synth]. I had been collecting all the individual parts of the System 100 and was happy to finally find the sequencer System 100-104. This was the first full track I created with it.”

Terence Fixmer’s path through the changing techno landscape of the past 20 years has been anything but direct. Indeed, the French born producer, musician and Planete Rouge label founder has long been influenced by the periphery of continental European dance music subgenres from electronic body music, new beat and acid, before combining them into his own pioneering hybrid of futuristic, EBM-inflected techno with classic releases such as 2001’s Muscle Machine or the collaborative Between The Devil LP with Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy as Fixmer/McCarthy. While the sound in recent years has been rediscovered and recast in diverse contexts by a new generation of producers, Through The Cortex sees Fixmer gravitating toward a different kind of industrial-tinged electronics, led as much (or more) by analogue sequencers, melodies and ultra-saturated sounds of synthesizers than drums and percussion. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases (2016’s Beneath The Skin EP and 2017’s Force EP), revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitar- like post-punk sensibility. Through The Cortex is techno with a voice – or rather multiple voices – guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. The result ranges from the slow John Carpenter-inspired Escape From Precinct 13 funk of “Expedition” and the patient yet muscular stomp of “Fury” to the mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single “Accelerate”, where Fixmer, using his voice as an instrument, chants the track’s ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse. Elsewhere, the story is told with more abstract and wailing vocals like on “Shout in A Black Hole”, or in the warm, entrancing chords floating across the stereo image in ostensibly changing time-signatures on “A Halo Somewhere” – the LP’s uncharacteristically kosmische musik come-down. The track, and Through The Cortex as a whole, reflect what can be described as Fixmer’s idiosyncratic take on both techno subgenres as well as the larger pool of electronic music in general. This broad approach translates into a sound that is not only difficult to pin down, but also one that lends itself to multiple listens.

In a career that spans two decades, Terence Fixmer reached worldwide recognition with the release of his debut album Muscle Machine on DJ Hell’s seminal International Deejay Gigolos imprint in 1999. The French producer and live act has consistently explored and redefined the boundaries of modern Techno –and he is not slowing down.
Dance Of The Comets is the second release on the newly relaunched NovaMutelabel. NovaMuteis the seminal techno label that has been home to Plastikman, Speedy J, Juan Atkins, Luke Slater, Joey Beltramand more. terence fixmer - Striking Patterns
Having remixed Depeche Mode and DJ Hell as well as releasing a new Fixmer/McCarthy single with Douglas McCarthy (of Nitzer Ebb), 2017 has already proven to be a productive year for Terence Fixmer. With the new Force EP, the Berghain resident follows up on 2016's Beneath The Skin EP (O-TON 97), offering four stylistically different but congenial Techno scenarios for club use. The record's eponymous track on A1 doesn't think twice: the initial signal horn starts as sudden as the staggered kick drum rhythm, reoccurring throughout the cut's 6-minute playtime while sustained and oppressive screams from a synth, extra multifaceted EBM percussion and synth drones add to the overall sombre atmosphere of “Force”. The musical vibe distinctly changes with “Sidewalk” which puts more focus on synth melodies – like its predecessor a Techno cut per se, but with a stronger accent on hypnotic motifs. On B1 “Melting Planets” emphasises the kick: clocking in slightly slower than the other three tracks – at 122 bpm – the bass drum here sounds extra vivid, ever-present and spot-on, just as if Terence was playing the drum kit sitting right next to you. With additional percussion and swirling melodies “Melting Planets” is a lulling, mesmerizing meditation in Dub Techno. “Striking Patterns” on B2 links to the best moments of Force EP's A-side, combining bone-dry bass drum hits and distinctive brazen, banging noises, pulsing synths pads and sizzling surface sounds.

terence fixmer - Immersion
Terence Fixmer goes Beneath The Skin on his first solo release on Ostgut Ton. There's few names that have left their mark on electronic music throughout time like Terence Fixmer did. The French producer has been releasing music since 1993 most notably under his own name, but also with his music wise wide-ranging alter egos Eisbär, Cyborg, Gemini 9, Scanner and – together with Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy – as Fixmer / McCarthy. It’s thanks to people like him that Electronic Body Music eventually traversed towards contemporary club contexts and now remains being a defining part of dancefloors in general, or a Klubnacht in particular. By combining the aesthetics of EBM, Electro and Industrial music with the rhythmics of Techno, Fixmer coined and occupied his very own musical niche as a producer and live act. At Ostgut Ton we’ve always been intrigued by Terence’s production style, his use of hard synth lines, guttural vocal samples, sharp-edged hi-hats, or to cut the matter short: his deep, glowering approach to sequencer Techno with EBM jabs. Therefore it’s great seeing him continue this path with four new tracks on the Beneath The Skin EP, following up on 2015’s Aktion Mekanik Theme Versions that featured remixes of the Music Man Records classic “Aktion Mekanik Theme” by Ostgut Ton's Kobosil, Marcel Dettmann and Norman Nodge. As aforementioned Beneath The Skin comprises the various musical facets of a Klubnacht: dark, pounding slaps and discomforting yet soaring synths (“Beneath The Skin”), Acid Techno modulations and lone voices in the dark (“Trace To Nowhere”), hypnotic synth progressions and ambient textures (“Devil May Care”) and finally some rest and soothing (“Immersion”)

Succeeding his profound and forward-thinking album 'Depth Charged' which was revealed last February, Terence Fixmer returns with 'Depth Charged Remixed' featuring Ostgut Ton's Answer Code Request and UK's underground techno hero Steve Bicknell. 'Elevation', originally the final track of the album, emotional and reflective, is kicked up a notch by ACR's Patrick Gräser by adding ponderous drum patterns making it perfect for the floor. Conversely, Steve Bicknell takes on 'Unforeseen'. With it's fast paced rolling bass it is now put into top gear shivering with feverish reverberations. To compliment each variation, included on the EP are Fixmer's own live versions that have energetically filled dance floors throughout his tour.

Kobosil, Norman Nodge and Marcel Dettmann offer new versions of Terence Fixmer's 2003 "Aktion Mekanik Theme" on Ostgut Ton. terence fixmer - A1. Aktion Mekanik Theme
It's safe to say that Terence Fixmer's track "Aktion Mekanik Theme", originally released on Music Man in 2003, was as much a landmark release for techno as the whole Aktion Mekanik compilation was for EBM as a genre. "As an artist who's been pushing EBM sounds into the modernity of Techno it was a logical step to do the compilation back then," Terence says. "I wanted to show my influences as a Techno artist, as Detroit sounds weren't my roots at all, but classics by Front 242, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Crash Course In Science or Snowy Red. I met Music Man's Stefaan Vandenberghe through Emmanuel Top in '93, and of course I was a fan of his label. Music Man was obviously the perfect place for this EBM project: they are from Belgium, they knew the bands, many of them were proud of this sound. So I discussed my idea of putting out a compilation with some classic and landmark tracks from the EBM direction with Stefaan, and it got made." While Ostgut Ton now releases three new versions of "Aktion Mekanik Theme" by Kobosil, Norman Nodge & Marcel Dettmann, Music Man now reissues the original version on red 12" vinyl.

Short info:
Over the past two decades, French producer and live performer, Terence Fixmer, has continued to evolve as an artist while maintaining his influential stance in international techno culture. With his last solo album, Comedy of Menace, already five years behind us, his continuous evolution has led him to produce his most introspective album yet. With this 10-piece composition Fixmer is able to tell a story from start to finish, with powerful, deep, dark, pulsating tones that are essential to his musical approach. Depth Charged is a complete concept as Fixmer's track arrangement takes the audience through various emotions illustrating how there is more to darkness than the dance floor. Beginning with a slow but heavy bassline, "Ellipse" acts as a perfect introduction setting the attitude for the album. "Fleeting Beauty" brings us fluttering chords amidst a serpentine drone, while the rolling bass of "Unforeseen" sends you into a trancelike state. "Purity" distracts the listener with its raw analog warmth filled with extraterrestrial energy. "Inside of Me," exclusively selected by Marcel Dettmann for his Fabric 77 mix, followed by "Outside of Me" are both very dark tracks, filled with atmospheric suspense and quaking rhythms. "Beyond" is a pure exemplary of Fixmer's signature style with an infectious progression sending anyone to the dance floor as "Pallid Light" follows its footsteps filling a bit more radiance into a modern techno sound. "Thoughts" shows another emotion of the album with deeper dub-like sonorities leading to the final track. Concluding the odyssey is "Elevation," the most melodic track of the album, beautifully deep, undulating and atmospheric, it is a breath of fresh air that brings one back to reality. Fixmer's productions have drawn the attention to stimulate individuals in other artistic mediums, as the track was an exclusive selection of Raf Simons to showcase his works for Dior at the CFDA-Awards. Raf has been a very big supporter of Fixmer's work since his first album in 2001, Muscle Machine. Passionate of profound mystifying tones that rise and fall, Depth Charged is the epitome of unique expressiveness for Terence Fixmer. With darkness as a companion, each track has come from deep inside the soul; uncompromised soundscapes that promote taking risks.

Pole, aka innovative German electronic artist Stefan Betke, presents a limited edition 12" single with new exciting remixes of tracks from his latest album, Tempus.
This 12" sees the title track 'Tempus' remixed by long-time Nine Inch Nails contributor, label mate and "synth connoisseur" Alessandro Cortini. The vinyl also includes the track 'Stechmück' remixed by Californian interdisciplinary artist Rrose, reworked by UK's electro-punk duo Sleaford Mods and edited by Pole. The original song embraces the sound of Betke's dying Minimoog, which you can hear manipulated in different ways across the different versions.
Düsseldorf-native musician, producer and mastering engineer Pole is known for his unique musical language oscillating between melody and avant-garde in electronic music, with audible influences from Dub and Jazz music. Tempus contributed to his ongoing musical evolution, while retaining a relationship to previous work, with Pitchfork stating "It's the sound of an artist drawing from his repertoire while demonstrating that he is still looking to the future."

Following the highly acclaimed record Fading in 2021, Pole continues his release series for Mute in 2022 with a new album, Tempus. Pole is Düsseldorf-native musician, producer and mastering engineer Stefan Betke, and is known for his unique musical language oscillating between melody and avant-garde in electronic music, with audible influences from Dub and Jazz music. While the subject of Fading focussed on coping with dementia and the loss of memory over time, Tempus focuses on the connection between the past, the present and the future. Translating to tense in English, Tempus investigates whether music that was created in the past, can still be audible and influential for the present, and how much can this music shine into the future.

‘Chris Carter’s Chemistry Lessons Volume One.1: Coursework’ was created using a newly-formed piece called ‘Bongo Glow’ and reworkings of three tracks from the original album. ‘Bongo Glow’, a work in progress at the time, was finished using the same processes as ‘CCCLV1’ so that it could appear on the Japanese release of the album. The additional three reworkings were created without direct instruction as an experiment to see how they changed with input from external sources. Daniel Avery’s remix of ‘Usyring’ is a slow building majestic tome that comes full circle. The Radiophonic Workshop took ‘Blissters’ and created a more experimental reworking in their unique style. Chris Liebing gave ‘Tones Map’ a brooding anthemic feel, adding his Slow Burn remix technique.

Since its inception in 2022 the PILLZ label has built a reputation for refined underground moods, and “Take A Chill Pill” is certainly no different.; The astounding Belgian producer; Session 4000 maneuvers and delievers 4 cuts between gritty shades of house and electro. This EP shifts the night into fifth gear with spaced out atmosfears and direct drive. Here is a producer whose experience for the hazy after hours takes us deep into such imagined trips as a “ravey conga paradise”, or some “hypnotic textured blend of vox sampled hits,” or twisted ravey motions, and big bass lines that blast the floor.

Gene On Earth - Aston Martinez
After being marooned in a small beach town in Brazil at the start of the pandemic, California-born Gene On Earth eventually made it home to Berlin. As the reality of the global situation sunk in, he set to work on his second album, working in an obsessive daily rhythm. After gathering an arsenal of samples and inspiration he returned to the studio for 5 months of feverish work. Set for release on June 3rd via his own imprint Limousine Dream, ‘Time on The Vine’ is a slick record delivered with the laid-back warmth of a producer at the top of his game. Breezy yet assured, its wonky minimal rhythms are as feel good as they are fun, a perfect antidote to the long and waning pandemic that birthed them.

Boulderhead debuts on Rhythm Section International with his most expansive EP to date:
“ I Need Space to Dance”
The Bristol based producer, known for his intricately crafted, up tempo club records has long been a favourite at RS HQ and has, over the years, garnered much respect from a plethora of influential DJs. His most recent hit “ Bread, Butter, Noodles, Spice”, was a festival earworm and one of the most played underground tracks of 2023.
Existing in the sweet spot between tech-house, prog, broken beat and minimal techno - this EP sees Boulderhead widen his sonic palette with a collection of songs that showcase his versatility.
Equally appealing to the Ricardo Villalobos contingent as it will be to those delving into the history of progressive house and the golden days of minimal techno - we think there’s a bit of something for everyone here.
Despite the many different bases the EP touches on - the sound pallette and production are unified and coherent. Henry is at the top of his game, and much like contemporary artists like Adam Pits, Priori and Russell EL Butler - his style screams ALBUM! More

Autumn of 2022 marked 20 years since the initial release of Metro Area's first and only album, Metro Area. Environ had already remastered and re-released this essential LP for its 15th anniversary. So this time around, we're doing something a bit different.
To celebrate two decades of Metro Area, Environ has partnered with renowned mastering engineer Matt Colton (Metropolis Studios) to remaster and recut the first four Metro Area 12"s: Metro Area, Metro Area 2, Metro Area 3 and Metro Area 4. Unlike the album reissue, these records include the original, extended 12" versions of all songs, including some which have never been re-released.
Metro Area 4 is the duo's fourth 12" EP, originally released in 2001. More

Environ is proud to announce the reissue of Morgan Geist's cult classic Super. Originally released in summer 2001, the record is an ode to New York City and many of the producer's most vital influences. With live strings from the Kelley Polar Quartet and plenty of disco DNA, it's no mystery that this was made by half of Metro Area (and released just months before their underground classic "Miura"). Remastered and cut by the award-winning Matt Colton of Alchemy Mastering.

"Mosaic Split Series kickstarts 2014 with three solid tracks of silky deepness that build upon the Mosaic sound of old whilst remaining firmly in the present. A: Steve O'Sullivan vs Kashawar "Take a Seat" Label boss, Steve O'Sullivan , follows up his recent Sushitech releases with this collaboration with young German producer Kashawar who has been gaining fans over the last year with his solidly atmospheric and funky EPs on Autoreply and Project London Records. Raw, slow old school house beats is the order of the day here with a sprinkling of melodic nu school deep techno touches that help to make this track perfect for both the warm up or after party. Just listen to the vocal sample if you have any doubts ... "Relax baby...Mr Big will take care of you in a minute." B1: Titonton Duvante "Such Good Taste" Despite an impressive back catalogue , including releases on Metamorphic, 7th City and Planet E , US techno veteran Titonton remains one of techno's best kept secrets and to say we are happy to welcome him to Mosaic is a massive understatement. Fusing the melodic edge of classical Detroit Techno with the jacking dancefloor intensity of Chicago, Titonton's "Such Good Taste," is a welcome addition to the Mosaic catalogue. ....the combination of kick drum and bassline alone are a thing of beauty... there is no way your ass won't move to this beast! B2: Eric Cloutier " Balsamaceous" Eric has made a name of himself over the last few years on the DJ circuit with sets that have been described as sprawling in depth and sophistication, fusing the brooding intensity of tripping techno with the mechanic funk of contemporary house. Thankfully for Mosaic his productions do the same! "Balsamaceous" is Eric's second release and showcases perfectly his unique take on the Detroit/Berlin Techno schooling he has obviously had: a deeply emotional yet hip wiggling take on the techno/house hybrid. This is one that will get the more discerning dancefloors shaking this year. Pure class is an understatement! "
